Mary

February 3, 2017

And the beat goes on. Mary’s confusion ramps up a notch. On Tuesday we urged her to go to Bible Study on Wednesday. But when Wednesday arrived, it became clear that wasn’t going to happen. Then Paula told me the story that evening of how she got up from her day long nap and told Paula that she was ready to go to Church. This was at 8 PM.

She is having great trouble distinguishing between morning and evening. She will get up in the evening and say “Good Morning” to me. It’s dark out, mind you. We try to encourage her to look at the clues of the time of day. Is it dark out? Is it light out? She mostly doesn’t get it. Same problem with the day of the week. I tried to get her to look at the header on the newspaper. She doesn’t do it even on Sunday when the top of the comics says in big bold letters “SUNDAY BREEZE”.

So last night, I was at Lodge. One of the few days that I get to be out without Mary. So Mary was talking to Paula. Apparently the subject got to be on dying. She usually doesn’t want to talk to me about dying. But for some reason, she was in the mood to be talking about death and dying. Paula asked her where she wanted to be buried and did she want an OES Funeral service. Paula gave her some options. She asked her if she would want to buried back in Kansas? Apparently not.

That’s just as well. The cost and logistics about doing that would be a big deal. She wasn’t sure about the OES service. Doesn’t matter, she’s getting an OES service whether she wants one or not. She did say that she would be fine with the Green Hill Cemetery would be fine. Okay, no problem. She wanted to know where Harold was buried. Ah, Paula told her, Harold was cremated and his ashes are in the office next to my computer. Ashes will be buried with her. We’re not ones for having ashes sitting on the shelf.

So tomorrow, she gets her hair done. Then we need to go see a notary to get the papers signed to transfer the ownership of her Prius to us. I’ve been putting this off for a long time. Need to get done before she dies. Everything gets harder after she’s gone.

Grocery shopping while she’s under the dryer. Watch the grandkids on Saturday afternoon. Paula will be making cookies with the kids while parents go on a date. Dinner for everyone Saturday evening.

Mary

January 26, 2017

2016-12-13-11-00-40Tuesday was Mary’s 93rd birthday. We decided to celebrate by taking her out for lunch at Hof’s Hut in Torrance. She was eager to go. No complaints of dizziness this time. When it’s something that she really wants to do, the dizziness will magically disappear.

Hof’s Hut was one of the places that Paula and her parents went to celebrate anything and everything. Paula tells me the story of going there as a little girl and eating a burger and the juice would dribble down he arm.

So what was interesting about this event? Well, Paula and I noticed another example of the onset of the dementia that has slowly but surely taking hold of Mary. The restaurant was busy and we had to wait for 10 minutes or so for a table.

Once we were seated, the waitress handed us all menus. The waitress took our drink orders. Mary wasn’t too sure what she wanted to drink. So we ordered the same thing that we were going to have. So Paula and I decide what we wanted and put the menus down. Mary is still studying the menu. Waitress comes by and asks are we ready to order. “Give us a few more minutes” we tell her.

The menu was information overload for Mary. Paula jumps in and makes a suggestion. There are so many things in our lives that are taken for granted in our lives. Tasks and functions that to us that are so easy and straight forward. For example, using a telephone or turning on the television. We do it with the ease of pushing a couple of buttons, but for Mary we might as well be talking about walking on the moon. And as time goes on it just gets worse for her.

Her trouble with the menu was just another example of her slide down the oh so slippery slope of dementia.

By the way, she had scrambled eggs with sausage and a cranberry muffin. She enjoyed the meal.

Happy New Year

Well, how’d that happen. Here we are in a new year. Nice, new and spiffy.

So first, an update on Mary. She continues to do well. We celebrated the new year last night with a bottle of champagne. I asked her if she thought she would make it to a new year? All I got was a shrug and a meh. Mary had a half a glass of the champagne. Paula and I finished the rest of the bottle. Didn’t want it go to waste. Sure was tasty.

We continue to be watchful of her condition. Yesterday, she had a nasty dry cough. So Paula gets out here trusty stethoscope and takes a listen to her lungs. That cough could turn into pneumonia in a heartbeat. If Paula were to take her to urgent care, yesterday would have been the day to do it. Urgent care closed today, so she would have to do the ER. But there were no sounds of pneumonia so never mind.

We have a follow up scheduled with her neurologist in a couple of weeks to discuss her recent MRI. We’ll see how that goes.

So this morning, Mary was up at her usual time at about 9 am. Instead of her usual oatmeal, Paula cooked her a scrambled egg. Paula offered her toast. Mary says, “What kind?” Well we have either sour dough or rye. She then says I don’t like either. I tell her that she doesn’t usually eat bread so we don’t get the kind of bread that she likes. She was looking at me with her “Why can’t you read my mind?” look. So, white bread is on the shopping list.

We asked her this morning if she wanted to go to church. The answer is still no. It seems that her mind gets stuck into regular routines. She will go out to get her hair washed and set at the beauty salon. She will go with us to OES meetings. But she won’t do church or Bible study on Wednesday. She uses her dizziness as an excuse, but I think there is a hidden issue that either she won’t or can’t verbalize. So Paula goes to church on Sunday, while I watch football (How about those Patriots?). And I go to the Bible study on Wednesdays. So what will I do once the football season comes to a close? Right, baseball is right around the corner. Spring training starts end of February. Woo-Hoo! Go Red Sox.

2016-12-31-18-47-47So we had an early Christmas with Mike and his family. They were heading up to the SF bay area to visit some of Theresa’s family, then to Reno for fun in the snow. It was fun to watch video of Jonathan taking his snow boarding lesson. He still hasn’t quite figured out the brakes yet. The kids seem to be enjoying the snow.

Starting in January, we are going to start scheduling regular caregiver visits so that Paula and I can get out for a date. Dinner and a movie or something similar. We will initially start doing it every other week and see how that works.

In other news, work continues on our condo complex. They are working on redoing the planters that are in the court yard between units. The planters are being reworked with plants that deal better with drought conditions. They are also working on resurfacing the upper walkways. Roofing is also being replaced. This means that weekdays can be pretty noisy and sometimes dusty. Here are a couple of before and now pictures.

But we have had rain on and off the past few days. We really need the rain. We got about 0.5″ yesterday. All work has stopped. That means it is now blissfully quiet. Alas, the rain just delays the work. Probably will restart on Tuesday with a vengeance.

2016-12-13-11-00-40Once last letter about Mary before Christmas.Today was a busy day. On the docket was the Assistance League Christmas Luncheon at Michael’s Tuscany Room in San Pedro. Up late last night working on Paula’s agenda for the event. Then when I was about to print the thing, I found that I was out of paper. All I could find was a package of fancy paper. It would have to do. Finally got to bed.

I had my alarm set for 0600 to get Paula and I up and ready. Mary had an appointment to get her hair done at 0830. So I get up and head for the bathroom to take my morning meds and relieve myself. The light in Mary’s room was on. WTF? We had early hair appointment because Paula had to be at the restaurant at 1000. It seems that she had got up earlier and got dressed and went back to bed. How much earlier, I do not know.

My job was to go to the local Costco in Torrance and pick up the two sheet cakes that Paula had ordered last week. I also picked up a couple of bottles of Bombay Sapphire Gin and some computer paper while I was at it. It turns out that getting to Costco 15 minutes before opening is a good thing. You get a decent parking space.

Well, Paula got her to the restaurant on time. Got her to the ladies’ room to do her business. Then got her seated. Then Paula got her a glass of White Zinfandel. All is well. One of the ladies across the table offered me a glass of wine from their bottle of Chardonnay. Why certainly I said. Nice way to ease the stress of the morning. Nice meal. I had some salmon. Very tasty. They had some tasty bruschetta for an appetizer. Also, tasty. We try to ask her if she had a good time. Apparently, this time she did. She saw some people that she knew.

I had to leave at 1:30 pm to go to my dentist appt to get my teeth scraped. So I missed the entertainment. We both pulled into the garage at about the same time. Enough fun for today. Sleep late tomorrow.

December 5, 2016

img_4861Time for an update. Mary has been doing pretty well the past couple of weeks. She has been going to physical therapy twice a week. It seems to help a little bit. She still complains of dizziness, especially in the mornings. For that reason, we try not to schedule anything for her early in the morning.

Last week she was complaining of a pain in her side and a dry cough. Seeing as she hadn’t fallen any time recently, so that kind of ruled out a broken rib. Paula took her to her urgent care doctor to get it checked out. Doctor T. seemed to think it was pleurisy (an inflammation of the pleura, the lining of the lung). Click here for more info on pleurisy. He prescribed an antibiotic for the infection and med for the cough. It seems that she is feeling much better. We don’t know how she got it or why, nor does it particularly matter.

On Friday, Mike and his family came over for dinner. Mary is always happy to see the grand-kids. She loves to see the little ones. It always puts a smile on her face.

We took her with us on Saturday to my lodge installation of officers. We will be going to our OES meeting tonight. She is happy to see all of the people she knows.

Our stress level has been increasing of late. We try not to leave her alone for any length of time. So either Paula or I stay with her. So that rules out going to the movies or shows. We look forward to doing the grocery shopping because that means we have about an hour alone together. We have been using caregivers for the longer trips but that can be a challenge for short time events like a date to go to the movies.

I have finished my annual Christmas letter. I have been doing it now for about 20 years. I just have to finish putting postage on the letters, sealing and dropping in the mailbox. This year the list has grown to about 140 of our nearest and dearest friends from Maine to California.

I don’t know if I will get out another post before Christmas. If I don’t, then I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of my readers a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Mary

November 12, 2016

Time for an update on Mary. No falls of late. We have been insisting on her using the walker. The walker has made a world of difference. She has been doing physical therapy twice a week. Sometimes, she tries to blow it off, complaining of dizziness. Most of the time we insist that she go. “It’s for your own good” and “We made an appointment for you”, etc.

The dementia continues to slowly get worse. Sometimes she will say something that is totally incongruous. For instance, a couple of months ago, she asked us if the lodge building was new? No we said, the building has been here for about 50 years.

She no longer goes to church on Sunday or the Bible study on Wednesday morning. We try our best to persuade her to go, but to no avail. She usually uses her dizziness as her excuse. But she will get up, get dressed and go to the hair salon to get her washed and set. Go figure. We try to make sure that one of us stays here with her. So that means that only one of us goes to church. Paula does Sunday and I do the Wednesday meeting. We don’t even think about having enough time to go out to the movies.

Most days, she gets up around 9 AM and has her usual breakfast of instant oatmeal with blueberries on top and coffee. Once she finishes she gets up and goes back to bed and sleeps all day until we wake her to watch the evening news. Today was different. Theresa had dropped off Jonathan and Sarah while she went to her choir rehearsal. Mary wouldn’t ever go back to bed if the grand kids were in the house. She wouldn’t miss that for the world.

Today we are watching our grandkids for Mike & Theresa. So we were all out side for a walk around our court yard. We normally have a very nice courtyard around our condo facility. But last week, they started ripping out part of the planter. The plan is to replace existing plants with some stuff that is drought resistant. (ie. requires less water for irrigation)

October 7, 2016

Here’s a quick update on Mary. She has been doing pretty good the last couple of weeks. We even got her to go to church this past Sunday. (Be still my beating heart). Still, she wasn’t up to doing Bible study this past Wednesday. I think that confuses her a lot. Of course, she won’t admit it.

Paula took her to see her eye doctor on Wednesday. It turns out that her prescription is in serious need of updating. She could barely read the big letters on the chart. So Paula ordered her two new sets of eyeglasses, one for her to use watching TV and one for general use. New glasses will be ready in a couple of weeks.

She is getting used to using the walker. She goes to PT twice a week. I think it helps, and it certainly doesn’t hurt.

The above picture was taken by me when we were at the Pacific Diner after church. Mary likes that because she gets to the the grand-kids.

So Paula and I are celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary and Paula’s birthday. So we got in touch with our caregivers to watch Mary while we take a trip up the Central California coast. Today, we toured the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. I will do a blog post on that tour on Sunday or Monday.

We are staying in a nice hotel in Morro Bay. Beautiful view of the bay. It’s nice to get away for a couple of days.  Drive back tomorrow. Our son Neil will be in town on Sunday. His trip is mostly for his girl friend to visit Disney Land and hit the beach. But we’ll get to have dinner with them on Sunday evening.

Tuesday Night

September 21, 2016

In the past, Tuesday nights were family nights. We would have our son and his family over for dinner. But now that the school year has started, doing dinner on Tuesday night became a problem. They needed to get our grandson Jonathan to bed by a decent hour so that he would get a full night’s sleep. School starts at 8:30 AM. and that meant we couldn’t do Tuesday dinner and get done early enough so that Jonathan could be in bed by 7:00 PM.

So, Paula and I suddenly had a free night. So I could go to my Shrine Club meeting with the guys. And Paula could go have dinner with the ladies. My meeting was with the Beach Cities Shrine Club at the Whale and Ale in San Pedro. The ladies were meeting at Trani’s, also in San Pedro.

So, if Mary was going to eat, she had to go with Paula. I heard from Paula that the service was none to good at Trani’s. We were getting text messages from some of the ladies that they hadn’t been served by 8:00 PM. By that time we were pretty much done.

So I had Fish and Chips at the Whale and Ale. This is one of their signature dishes. Very tasty. I had a “Dirty Martini” to wash it down. I need to do a blog post on various martini variations. So to make it short, a “Dirty Martini” is two parts gin, one part dry vermouth and an ounce of olive juice. I think I prefer a Martini straight up.

So I was home well before Paula hit the road. I used my “Find My iPhone” app to show me when Paula was coming home. So I asked her how things went. Terrible she says. She asked her mother if she had a good time. Mary says, “No, it was terrible”.

Apparently, Mary didn’t recognize anyone at the table except Paula. Even though she should have recognized at least half of the ladies at the table. This event made it clear to us that Mary’s dementia is getting much worse. We will most likely not take her to events like this in the future. No fun for us and no fun for Mary. In addition, she is having more and more difficulty in carrying on a conversation.

Mary

September 19, 2016

Well, its been a busy couple of weeks. On Sunday, we asked Mary if she wanted to go to church. She of course wanted to go, but when it got to be game time (ie. Time to hit the road) she decides to pass. Too dizzy she says. Actually, that made our life a little bit easier. Paula went to church and I went to the grocery store to pick up a couple of things. Then, to the bakery to pick up the cake for Sarah’s birthday.

Oh right, I forgot to say, yesterday was Sarah’s 2nd birthday. The family arrived at 12 noon on the dot. Little Jonathan, rushes in and announces, “Sarah is two!!”. Then Sara and Jonathan see the presents wrapped on the table, and Jonathan asks, “Is this for me?” He sees the Transformer wrapping paper which is definitely telling. Well maybe, we say. We’re not opening presents just yet.

It’s time to eat brunch. And then we have a birthday cake for Sarah. It was a banana creme cake from Amalfitano’s bakery in San Pedro with figure of Minnie Mouse on top (Sarah’s fave). Of course, Jonathan’s birthday is coming up in October (and he knows it). And he will tell you that is will be five. (And holds up 5 fingers)

Jonathan’s gift was a black Jeep truck. He was ecstatic. The anti-theft packaging was a pain. I needed to get out a screw driver to release the truck from the packaging. ARGHHl He knows that Grandpa drives a black Jeep (which he calls the “Jeep Truck”). Whenever we go somewhere he looks for it.

So let’s get back to the subject of Mary. We have her doing physical therapy twice a week. We still have her using the walker. She grumbles about that every now and then but uses it. We tell her if you don’t use it, you will fall and get hurt. (And perhaps kill you.) We don’t actually say that but I think that she knows. She continues to sleep a lot during the day.

Yesterday was a particularly busy day for her in that after the birthday party we took her to Shriner BBQ at LA Harbor Lodge. Her husband Harold, was very active in the Shriners. I got her a glass of White Zin to lubricate herself. Then Paula got her a steak and some salad. After dinner, there raffles of door prizes. I won a bottle of Johnny Walker Black. Made my day.

We don’t understand why she keeps blowing off going to church. One thought is that she is dizzier in the morning but she doesn’t complain about going to PT at 9:30 AM. Another thought that we have is that she doesn’t to have other people seeing her as old and weak. Who knows? We just go with the flow. If you want to go, then fine, If not, fine.

Mary

September 5, 2016

Time for an update. Saints be praised! Mary went to church with us on Sunday. For the past 6-8 weeks, Mary has begged off on going to Church on Sunday and Bible study on Wednesday morning. Every time we suggested that she get dressed and go to church, she told that she was too dizzy and too tired.

So what’s different today? Well, for one thing we stopped one of her meds that was prescribed by her neuro doctor. She had an appointment with him a week or so ago, and we brought up our suspicion that it was making the dizziness worse. So the neuro doc agrees and takes her off of the med. I forget the name, but it doesn’t matter.

So she got hugs all around from the folks who hadn’t seen her in a while including Pastor Jacques. I think she enjoyed the attention. After the service we went out for lunch at the Gaffey Street Diner (one of our usual restaurants). Mary had some clam chowder. She pretty much finished the bowl.

We have Mary using the walker full time now. She grumped about it at first but she has gotten used to it. I think that she has come to understand that if she doesn’t use it she would likely fall again. Stowing the walker is a PITA when getting her into the car, but we deal with it.

A couple of weeks ago, Paula and I got away for a weekend up in the Bay area (Oakland) for an OES reception. We had our usual care-givers from CarenetLA to look after Mary. It was nice to get away for the weekend.

We’ll see if we can get her to Bible study this week.
