Mary, God and the Conversation

July 6, 2015

So do you remember article in the New York Times that I wrote about a couple of days ago? The one by Eleanor Goodman? Yeah, that one. What you didn’t read it? Go back and read it, I’ll wait. Click here.

Yesterday, I had printed a copy of the article for Paula to read. So the printed copy was sitting on the dining room table. So Mary picks it up and starts reading it. Indeed, she is studying it. Front to back, back to front. Then a few hours later she looked at it again.

So I ask her what she thought about the article. She replies that she is talking with God about that. Okay, Do you think you could share your side of the discussion. No, that’s between me and God. I told her that God might not be sharing your discussion with us and it might be helpful if Mary would talk to us about that. Nope.

So that reminds me of an old joke. There was a great flood throughout the land and a man was sitting on the top of his home waiting to be rescued. So the man prayed to God, “Please God, save me”.

So a while passed and a lifeboat came by and the life boat crew asked him to get in and they would save him. Nope, the man said, “I am waiting for God to save me”.

Then some time passed and there was a Coast Guard helicopter hovering above the man. The helicopter pilot asked the man to get in and be saved. No, the man said, “I am waiting for God to save me”.

So maybe, by this point you know where I’m going with this. Eventually, the man drowns. So he reaches the pearly gates, the man asks God, why didn’t you save me?” And God said, “I sent you a life boat and a helicopter, but you decided not to get in. What was I supposed to do?”

So my point is (and I do have a point) sometimes we have to recognize that sometimes God sends someone to help us. We need to recognize this. Paula and I are the crew of the lifeboat. We just need Mary to get in the boat.

Mary K, Inc.

June 29, 2015

Back in the day, Mary was the one who managed the family finances. All Harold wanted was enough money so that he could do his Lodge and Shrine activities. Harold didn’t care  a fig about paying bills. Mary was happy to do it. So it was a struggle for Mary to give up this responsibility. So when Harold died in 2009, she was already handling the finances.

Three years ago when Paula and I arrived in San Pedro after moving from Mass, I was beginning to see warning signs. Bills were not getting paid every month. Sometimes, bills would get over paid. Since we were living with Mary, I could see the mail arriving every day and see the bills. i would also see piles of mail on the table that would eventually get put into a shopping bag and then forgotten. Sometimes, Mary would write a check then put in envelope and forget to mail it.

To add to the problem of incoming bills in the US Mail, she was also receiving mail from every right wing politician and organization looking for money. Indeed, even Harold (who has been dead now for almost six years) was receiving (and continues to receive) political mail. She was donating money to political causes. Not a lot, but enough to get her on numerous mailing lists. Even dying won’t get you off of the mailing lists. She was getting to be unable to filter the important mail from the chaff. More on that later. My view is that giving money to politicians just encourages them.

So, our goal has been to keep Mary safe and to avoid nursing homes at all cost (pun intended). Paula watches over her health issues, I watch over her fiscal issues. We both are cooks and chauffers. So I have become the CFO of Mary K, Inc. It didn’t start that way but after her first fall, it became clear that I had to do a more active role in managing her finances. Living with her certainly makes that easier.

After her fall in Dec 2013, we took a trip to Wells Fargo Bank. WF is her primary checking and savings account. At the time I was examining her bank statement and found three fraudulent checks written to the tune of about $12k. At the time Paula and I had Mary add us as signers on the account. If I hadn’t been looking over her statements, she would have never seen the issue

Because of the fraudulent checks, we had to open a new account and close the old one. WF has an electronic banking feature that allows me to get email notification on balances and checks paid. At the time, she had over $30K in her checking account. So I moved most of that money to her savings account. My goal was to have no more than $5K in the checking account and no less than $2K. Fraudsters can empty an account in a heartbeat. No use making it too easy.

So over the past year or so, we made trips to the other banks where Mary had money stashed away and got our names added to the accounts. Once again using electronic banking to monitor the cash flow from pensions, investments and payments. The faster I can notice something amiss, the easier it is to get the bank(s) to fix it.

Back to the political mail. Even though I tend to be more leftist in my thinking I would be throwing out mail from Democrats as well as Republicans. The donations are not tax deductible. Sending them money just encourages them to send more mail. There is a large trash can in the mail room. The political mail doesn’t get past the trash bin. We would be drowning in paper if I brought it upstairs.

One more “Mary” story and then I’ll shut up for today. Over the years, one of Mary’s “hobbies” has been real estate. Several times over the years when she came to visit us in Mass., she would go out looking at houses with little intention of buying. And so it went in San Pedro. She would look at real estate. So the real estate agent would call after a couple of weeks to check on Mary. I had to tell him or her the bad news. Mary would not be buying any real estate this time. Though from time to time she would decide to buy. She tended to move every 7 years or so. I don’t know how Harold managed to put up with that.

So not long after we arrived in 2012, she went out to look at some new town houses not far from us. I knew this because she brought home several glossy brochures extolling the wonderfulness of the property. I told her, “Mary we need to talk”. I can’t tell whether you are “just looking” or are “serious”. I told her that Paula and I had just finished a difficult trans-continental move. I told her that if she did this, it would be on her own. She could move, but we wouldn’t move with her. That was the end of that little adventure. As it turns out, the townhouses would have been spectacularly bad for her and us. Stairs are not our friend.

Joe

Time for another update on Mary. Overall, she is well, but she continues a long slow decline.

She survived our trip to Boston last week with the help of care givers from CarenetLA. We arrived at LAX on last Tuesday. We took Mary to Bible Study on Wednesday.

It seems that she is moving even slower than in the past. She seems to always need to hold on to one of us. She is suffering more and more with dizziness.

A couple of days ago I asked her what she would like for breakfast. She says I’d like a waffle. I told her no waffles to day. Choices were toast or cereal. If you want a waffle, you will need to get it at Gaffey Street Diner on Sunday. So we got her some frozen waffles to try. We’ll see how that goes.

Her memory is also fading. On Friday evening, we were eating dinner at our dining room table. Mary asks us if we were going anywhere on Saturday. We told her that Paula and I were going grocery shopping and that she had nothing on her schedule. The thing that was very odd, was that she asked the same question two more times over the next 30 minutes.

We took her with us to church on Sunday at Ocean View. She seemed to do well. We went out for brunch afterwards to one of our favorite spots, Gaffey Street Diner.
Last update, I promised pictures.

Here are a couple taken at Gaffey Street.

Election Day

November 4, 2014

Another day in the life of caring for an ninety year old woman. Best laid plans and all that. Paula and Mary planned to attend a luncheon meeting for Assistance League. Assistance League is a charitable organization of women run by women. Starts at about 10am and runs until about 1:30pm. So I have about 3.5 hours of free time.

So off I go to vote. Polling place pretty much deserted at 10am. I vote and head for Starbucks. I have a dark roast and cranberry scone. Delicious. I have a few minutes of peace and quiet.

Now back to the election. CA sent out flyers that explained in gory detail all of the ballot questions. Arguments for and against. I hung on to them, knowing that Mary would want to study them. She wrote some notes but loses the notes. She can’t remember the details from one day to the next.

Mind you the questions are complicated and would stress out a normal person with reasonable intelligence. So this morning Mary studies the information and writes some notes. So far so good.

So Paula and Mary arrive home at about 1:30pm. Did you vote? I say. Paula yes, Mary no. She wasn’t ready. So I ask her was she planning on voting. Yes she says. I groan. That means that someone (probably me) will have to take her back to the polling place later. And it would have to happen before 5pm.

She eventually gave up and went back to bed for a long afternoon nap.

And by the way, she had another fall on Saturday night. She got dizzy and fell. Luckily no damage done. She couldn’t get up without help. We were planning on taking her to the Demolay installation. So Paula got her undressed and put her to bed to rest.

Weekend Update

October 15, 2014

It’s been a bit crazy around here lately. This past Friday, our friend Andrea came to visit. Andrea is a college friend of Paula who lives up in Sacramento. [Andrea reads my blog, so I must be nice.] Paula and I headed up to LAX to pick her up at the South West terminal at about noon. LAX is a crazy place any time of day or night. Always heavy traffic.

Well Andrea eventually arrived and texted us at the cell phone lot. Seeing as it was noon and we hadn’t had lunch we headed to Hof’s Hut in Torrance. We had a coupon for a free meal that Paula received for her birthday. Then we headed to Trader Joe’s to shop for groceries for the weekend.

On Saturday, we planned to meet Ron & Thelma from San Diego. It’s about a two hour jaunt down to SD. We agreed to meet in the middle at the El Adobe Mexican Restaurant in San Juan Capistrano. SJC is just about half way between San Pedro and San Diego. We started off with margaritas all around.

Interesting factoid about El Adobe. It was President Richard Nixon’s favorite Mexican Restaurant. His residence is not too far away in San Clemente. President Nixon would be known to send a secret service guy to get take out.

We exchanged stories and pictures of our respective grand-children. Then I got a text message from our son Mike. It seems that Mary K had gotten a might bit confused. She woke up from a long nap and thought it was Sunday morning. And seeing as we weren’t there, she called Mike to see if she could get a ride to church. Sigh…

Ron had just gotten a new Honda Pilot. Seats eight. Plenty of room for the family. Mike and Theresa just got a new Honda Odyssey. Same reason. Both cars are nice looking rides. Maybe one of these days we will trade in the 2007 Jeep.

On Sunday, we all went to church, followed by a trip to the Gaffey Street Diner for some quality diner food. Gaffey Street was one of the places reviewed by Guy Fieri’s Food Network show. It’s one of our favorites. They just about know what I will order (Bacon and Eggs, Over Medium, Sour Dough Toast.) If I order something different the waitresses look at me funny.

Finally on Monday, we took Andrea back to LAX for her flight to Sacramento. We love to visit but love to see her leave so that I get my office space back. Our third bedroom is combination guest room and office. We told Andrea that we would prefer that she fly to Long Beach Airport. Much less stress than LAX. No lines, no traffic.

On Saturday, we will be making a quick trip to Visalia for the OES Grand Chapter Installation. Drive up on Saturday, back on Sunday.

More on Mary

June 16, 2014

Time for an update. Paula spent the last five days up in Salt Lake City tending to her Mother. If you missed the previous posts, she fell and broke her hip this past Wednesday.

She was moved to a rehab wing of the Jordan Valley Medical Center on Monday. She in all likelihood be there for the next four weeks. She getting PT twice a day. She can get up and walk with help of a walker.

I picked up Paula yesterday afternoon at LAX. I was so happy to have her home. I was really missing her. I had made three passes to terminal four before I found her. Usually I hang out in the Cell Phone Lot until she calls or texts me. (The cell phone lot at LAX is across from Parking Lot C. You can wait there for free until your traveller arrives. The idea is that your traveller calls or texts when they are at the curb. ) This time she sent the text a little too soon. Sunday traffic at LAX was crazy.

We went to our son Mike’s house in PV for Father’s Day celebration. Hamburgers, hot dogs and beer. Paula gets down on the floor and plays with Jonathan. Jonathan loves his fire trucks. Jonathan is really good at mugging for the camera.

So, back to Mary. I sense there is a bit of depression setting in. She is wondering whether she would ever get home to LA. We keep telling her to do her exercises and it will happen. She is struggling with what God’s plan for her is. We can’t answer her but to say that it’s not your time yet. Stop obsessing over it. It doesn’t do anyone any good. It just deepens your funk.

Indeed, I remember how I felt after my hip surgery in 2009. All I wanted to do was go home. Sleep in my own bed, etc. Perhaps, I can help her through that knothole. Have to work on the short term goals and the long term goal will take care of itself.

So Paula has a week to recover from the trip before we go back to SLC. I volunteered to go with her on this next trip. I would rather stay home and arrange my sock drawer, but she needs me for support. So the sock drawer will have to wait. So we will be up in SLC for a week. After that, we’ll see.

Neil has volunteered to fly with her back to LA when the time comes. That’s a really good idea. She certainly can’t fly by herself. And it will give us a chance to connect with Neil.

So we went grocery shopping today. There are a few adjustments. First, we are buying only for two not three. Second, we are buying things that Mary really doesn’t like (Pasta, for example). Third, we are not buying things that Mary primarily consumes (eg. White Zin wine, butter milk).

Looking on the bright side, this happened in SLC where we have family that can look after while we are not there. It could just have happened in Las Vegas where we know no one.

 That’s enough for now.

One Long Bad Day

June 5, 2014

Yesterday, was one long damn day. We drove 435 miles and arrived in West Jordan Utah. Downhill from there.

We checked into our hotel and unloaded all of our luggage. Then we went over to Neil’s house. We had a while to wait. Dawn was at the airport picking up her parents. Mary was having her usual glass of White Zin wine. She got up to go to the bathroom.

The bathroom is a small half bath. After she stood up she was trying to straighten up the rug that was somewhat askew. Well she took a fall. We got her up and sat her in a chair with wheels and tried to assess the situation.

She was in a lot of pain, so we called the EMT’s. She was transported to a local ER, where they did X-rays and gave her pain meds. The diagnosis was a fractured left hip.

So then we waited. The orthopedic surgeon was called. ER decided to admit her and ortho would talk with us this morning. Probably surgery sometime this afternoon or evening.

Mary is conscious (never lost consciousness) but very groggy from the pain meds. So we have many questions for the surgeon and hospital. Clearly Mary won’t be able to travel any time soon. We need to figure out how long we will stay up here in Utah. We both only packed meds for a week.

As always prayers are welcome. We will be busy this morning calling her family in Texas and Louisiana. Last night I was busy texting family.

We finally got back to our hotel at 1:30am and to bed.

 Update later.

Jonathan

May 31, 2014

Yesterday, we were watching our grandson Jonathan all day while Mike and Theresa went to a conference on home-schooling. So Jonathan arrived early and left late. He has become quite used to our place and our presence. He fussed just for a few seconds when they left. But that ended quite promptly after they left. Jonathan has a generous set of toys at our place. He knows where they are and that they are his toys.

In previous posts, I have talked about our journey to Los Angeles. If Mike, Theresa and their family were living in the Boston area, we probably wouldn’t have made the decision to pull up stakes and move across the country. We would probably have moved Mary either to assisted living or a nursing home or moved her back east. Mary was one of the reasons we moved here, Jonathan is the reason that we are staying here and enjoying life here out west.

So yesterday morning we decided to go for a walk around our condo walkway. Jonathan is still learning to speak, but he clearly understands us. When we said “Let’s go for a walk”, he went to our front door and got his shoes. (We have adopted a Chinese custom of removing one’s shoes inside.) So off we go,the three adults walking and Jonathan running as fast as his little feet can carry him. He stops to look at the shadows cast from the trees and railings. He looks at the flowers. This is a nice place to walk. It is flat and protected. No danger of running out into traffic. We can let him run to his heart’s content. Here are a couple of pictures:

2014-05-30 10.16.06

Jonathan is clearly picking up language. Sometimes we can’t tell whether the word is childish gibberish or Chinese. His word for a dog is “gogu”. Many times Jonathan will point to something that he wants (usually to eat). So now we tell him , “Use the word”. We usually know what he wants but we are encouraging him to use words for whatever he wants. Usually pretzel goldfish, potato chips, crackers, etc. All of the things that he knows that grandparents will have on hand for him.

Yesterday we were fixing lunch and he comes in to help speed things up. He has discovered the ice dispenser and water dispenser on our refrigerator. So he pushes the lever and out comes half a dozen ice cubes. So Jonathan says in the cutest possible way, “OH-OH”. So Paula tells him to pick up the ice and put it into the sink, which he does. So today’s word is “Oh-Oh”. Precious.

By 2PM, everyone is ready for a nap. Jonathan is no exception. He lays down on our bed and sleeps for 1.5 hours. Sometime a little longer.

After nap, we decide we can do a little TV. We bring up our Netflix account and start “Curious George”. There is lots of kids programming on Netflix. Sometimes we watch on the TV, sometimes on the iPad. After Curious George, it’s time for Red Sox Baseball on MLB.TV. You can’t start a child too early on watching Red Sox Baseball. By the time he is five, I expect him to know who “Big Papi” is and how to read a baseball score sheet.

So today is Saturday and much quieter around her.

Later…

Update on Mary

May 29, 2014

Okay, it’s been a while since I last gave an update. As many of you know, Paula and I are living with her mother here in Sunny California. It will be two years in August since we arrived here from Massachusetts.

Mary is recovering nicely from here shoulder surgery in January. She just this week did her last physical therapy session. She could probably do more of the exercises that have been given her to do at home. She hasn’t had any falls since last December and that is a good thing. We have to be ever vigilant especially on steps and rough surfaces. She still is driving. Every once in a while she brings up the subject and we try to put off the subject. Eventually she forgets about it.

Her short term memory is getting much worse. She has trouble remembering what day of the week it is. We have a calendar on the kitchen table that she can use to help track what she is doing (or supposed to be doing). We are continuing to try to keep our home safe from trip hazards. We are constantly reminding her to use her cane. We have warned her that the next fall might kill her.

Mary and Paula just returned from a trip to Kansas for Mary’s high school reunion. Unfortunately her brother, sister-in-law and sister were unable to make the trip due to health reasons. But nevertheless she met with many of her cousins that she would not have otherwise seen. She doesn’t communicate well with her family. No writing, no phone calls, no email. If sometimes we make the call she will talk. So Paula and I have become the conduit for communication with her siblings.

When our grandson Jonathan comes to visit her eyes just light up. Jonathan is 2 1/2 years old and is extremely cute. Those visits just make her day.

Over the past couple of years we have managed to improve her diet. Before we arrived, her meals were few and far between. She said that she just wasn’t hungry. So we now have regular meals and get her to sit at the table and eat with us. Figuring out what she likes to eat though is a challenge. Managing the left overs in the refrigerator is also a problem. We usually go out to lunch after church. Mary usually eats about half of her meal and takes the rest home. Then we try to get her to eat the stuff that she brought home as well as other stuff before it spoils and needed to be thrown out.

So next week we are driving to Salt Lake City to visit with our son Neil and attend his step-son’s graduation. So on the one hand Mary will be riding with us. So that means we don’t have to worry about her well being while we are gone, but she is a lousy traveller. I will need to manage two sets of room reservations and try to get her to help pay for some of the meals and other travel expenses. Actually, that’s a lot easier now, I just charge it on her credit card.

That’s all for now. I hope to do a post while we are up in SLC.

 Later,

 Joe
