Update on Mary

April 12, 2014

First the good news. Mary’s shoulder continues to improve. She is doing PT twice a week in outpatient rehab facility in San Pedro. Sometimes Paula takes her and sometime I get the job. She isn’t driving yet. We hope that she doesn’t get to drive again. She really needs someone at her side to catch her if she stumbles. Another fall could kill her. She stills has some shoulder pain. Some days are better than others. Dr. prescribed an NSAID for the pain. It seems to help.

Now the bad news. Her mental facilities have been fading of late. She certainly knows who Paula and I are. But some times she is confused as to what day it is.

For example, today she slept most of the afternoon. She got up at about 5:30 PM. She says to me, “I don’t usually wake up this early in the morning”. I try to gently tell her that it is 5:30 PM not AM.

Often times she will ask several times what day it is and what we are doing for the day. She sometimes forgets what we did an hour ago. We will watch the local news. Afterwards, she will ask if we can watch the news.

Paula will be taking her for her high school reunion in Eureka, KS in May. The reunion is held every year on Memorial Day weekend. The high school was so small that the reunion is for all class years. I begged off. I have appointment to rearrange my sock drawer. Mary definitely needs someone to shepherd her through the complexities of air travel. Especially since they will need to change planes in Las Vegas.

Paula and I have pretty much taken over her day to day scheduling. Making Dr’s appointments and taking were she needs to go. Paying her bills, etc. One day at a time.

The bravado that we faced when we first moved out her is pretty much gone. i.e I can do everything for myself, by myself. She seems to have learned to accept the help that we have given her.

I have begun to cherish the time that I get Paula alone. We are looking forward to our trip back to Mass in May. It will be a short trip due to the need to turn around and take Mary to KS.

Later,

Joe

Mother in Law

March 10, 2014

So yesterday at Ocean View we had a guest preacher who was preaching about marriage. After reading the title I was bracing myself for the harangue about same sex marriage, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was about the sacredness of marriage vows. It was more something I would expect to hear in a Roman Catholic Church. He was quoting from Malachi Chapter 2. But never mind.

This post is more about Mothers-in-law. Our own pastor at the end of the service told us a joke about Mothers-in-law. It goes something like this:

M-I-L to S-I-L: I would like to be cremated.

S-I-L to M-I-L: Okay, get your coat. Let’s go.

I told Pastor Jacques after the service, I feel your pain.

So as a Son-in-Law living with my Mother-in-Law, I try real hard to keep a thick skin and try to ignore the unintentional and intentional slights. Every day is a challenge.

So yesterday, Paula and I were planning on going to the movies to see “12 Years a Slave”. [By the way, it’s a great movie. Go see it.] We asked Mary K if she would like to come. Sometimes I hope for a “No” so that I can have some alone time with my Paula. But this time she said yes.

So off we go to the theater in Torrance. We hardly get a 1/2 mile from our house when she tells us that she forgot her glasses. So we are already on a tight schedule. So we don’t go back.

We find a parking space that is not too far from the theater. (Perhaps I need to try again to persuade her to apply for a HP placard.) We get out tickets and proceed to the theater. The lights are already down low for the upcoming attractions. We now find out that Mary K is now having really big problems with low light situations. The only place with three seats together is about 15 rows up.

I need to go into the row first to guide Mary K to her seat. So Mary K plops down between Paula and myself. So i can’t even sit next to my wife in the theater, arghhhh.

The film finishes and we wait for the credits to finish and for the house lights to come up so that we can get Mary K safely down the stairs without danger of falling.

As we head back to the car, we come to a curb that is painted red and is a contoured shape. Paula tries to get her to traverse the curb. It is clear that she can’t see it very well. So she stumbles and falls backward. Luckily we have a good hold on her and we manage her to a soft landing on her butt.

We finally get her back on her feet and back into the car. We stop for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant. Then finally home and after some news, into bed.

One more thing. Weather today is 75 and sunny. Not a cloud in the sky. I’m writing this sitting on the balcony. Paula and Mary K are off to her PT session. So I have about an hour of quiet time.

Update on Mary 2

February 25, 2014

It’s been a while since I’ve reported on Mary. She is recovering nicely from her surgery. She’s had occupational therapy (OT) at home three times a week. She is mostly going without the sling so she is a bit more functional, but not quite 100%.

Keeping track of her schedule for Dr’s appointments is challenging. It seems there always somewhere that we need to take her. And seeing as she isn’t driving, either Paula or I do the driving.

She finally allowed me to take over managing her finances. What a mess. I collected all of the tax related mail into a folder. This past Saturday I took the folder to her tax guy. I had thoughts of doing her taxes myself, but thought better of the idea. Easier to drop the load of paper on the accountant and let him sort it out. He had it done in short order. No missing 1099’s. I got her to sign the efile voucher. Now we’re all done but for sending the IRS and state of CA checks. The good news is that her finances are strong. She often claims poverty, but that just doesn’t hold up when you look at the numbers.

So in looking at her bank statement for January, I found someone had written three checks for a total of about $10,000. Mary had no clue about the checks. So off we go to Wells Fargo to try and straighten out the mess. We had to create a new account and transfer funds from the old account. So we need to get new checks and new debit cards. We left $200 or so in the old account to cover the last few checks outstanding. Paperwork sent to WF fraud department. We will probably get the money back. We have no idea how someone got a hold of the blank checks. We are trying to make sure that no blank checks are left out in plain view in the condo. Just in case our housekeeper was grabbing them.

So, what next? Mary will be starting outpatient physical therapy this week. We will be beginning to plan our trip back east in May. Right now, we feel comfortable leaving her alone for a couple of hours so that Paula and I can have a date night. We are less comfortable leaving her alone for a week. We are hoping that we can find someone (perhaps from church or OES) to spend the week with her. Paula and I will manage to fit in our annual physicals this month.

So I hear it has been snowing a bit back east. I have been trying real hard not to comment. The weather here has been outstanding. Today is sunny and about 70. Forecast for the weekend is a serious rain storm. Lord we can use the rain. Prices of fruits, vegetables and meat are surely going up this summer as more large farms in the CA Central Valley fail. By the way, gasoline here just went up over $4.00 per gallon of regular.

Tuesday night is our regular family dinner tonight. Mike, Theresa and Jonathan will be here. Menu is meatloaf, mashed potatoes and beans or as I like to call it “Masonic menu #2”. Menu #1 is of course “Roast beef, Potatoes, and green beans”. Of course are green beans are fresh, at Thomas Talbot Lodge they come out of a can (gross).

Theresa and Mike are expecting their second child in October. We are so looking forward to our second grandchild.

Well, that’s enough for now. Stay warm.

Happy Birthday

January 25, 2014

Friday was Mary’s 90th birthday. She started the day with visits from her Occupational and Physical Therapists (OT and PT). The OT worked with her on getting her shirt on over the injured shoulder and sitting and standing without using her cane. The PT worked with her on her exercises. Mary is seeing improvement in her ability to move her fingers.

After the OT and PT left, we had lunch with our friend Heather from church. She brought her a small arrangement of white roses.

After lunch, we all took a short nap. Then at 5 PM, Pastor Rich Freeman stopped by for a short visit. He brought some group pictures from a couple of their trips together to Ireland and Turkey/Greece. She insisted on getting dressed up for Pastor Rich’s visit. The visit with Pastor Rich just made her day. Mary was just beaming with joy. Note, the UC Davis sweat shirt on Pastor Rich.

Then at 6PM Mike and family arrived for dinner of Chili and fresh bread. I got out a fresh bowl of Goldfish for Jonathan. As soon as he saw the Goldfish, he went and pushed his highchair over to the table. His way of saying that he was hungry and I really like Goldfish.

One of our neighbors stopped by to visit. Susan has two Chihuahuas. The two dogs were quite shy. Jonathan didn’t quite know what to do with the chihuahuas. I doubt that he has ever seen dogs quite that small.

Mike and Theresa brought an Oreo ice cream cake from Baskin-Robbins. Another food that Jonathan likes. Mary had room for cake too.

Everyone loves an ice cream cake

So eventually Mike, Theresa and Jonathan left. We sat down to watch the evening news. Then off to bed. We expect Saturday to be a much quieter day.

Update on Mary

January 19, 2014

Time for an update on Mary. It’s been a crazy week. I have sent a few folks email updates but I thought I could do a more complete story by writing it once here for everyone to read.

Mary had her shoulder surgery this past Monday. The surgery is called “Reverse Shoulder Replacement“. See the link for more than you ever wanted to know. Apparently there was enough damage to the head of the humerus that it warranted doing the shoulder replacement. The doctor said that if no surgery done, then it would heal but it probably wouldn’t be very useful. Here’s a typical X-ray of a reverse shoulder replacement.

Mary went through the surgery with flying colors. Paula had taken her to the hospital at zero dark thirty. I remained at our condo for our housekeeper to do her work. (She comes every other Monday, and this past monday was her day).

So once Alicia left, I was going to the hospital to visit. Not so fast bucko, dead battery. So I called AAA. They came in under 15 minutes. These days the AAA truck carries replacement batteries with them in the truck. So I had the old battery replaced in under 15 minutes. $99 plus tax and I am on my way. The battery in the jeep was original equipment, six years and 100K miles.

So while Mary was recuperating in the hospital, Paula and I had a date night. We went to see “American Hustle”, then dinner at local Mexican restaurant.

Then on Wednesday, Mary was discharged from the hospital. We got her home and settled in. I think she was happy to be home. Pastor Jacques from Ocean View Baptist Church came to visit Mary that evening.

So for the past few days she has been resting and sleeping a lot. She gets up for meals. Sometimes she will watch the news on TV. Last night at about 6PM, she had a craving for a hamburger. So off I go to the In’n’Out drive thru for a burger and fries (no cheese, no onion). I guess she hasn’t lost her taste.

Ever since her fall on 12/22, she seems so much more frail. It’s like someone flipped a switch and all is gone. One of the home health aides came to talk with us on Saturday. We brought her up to speed on Mary’s recent health history. Probably starting physical therapy at home pretty soon.

Followup with the surgeon next Thursday. She now has got religion about using her cane. Even with the cane, we have to be very cautious. We had a near miss last night. While heading for her seat on the couch, she stumbled and almost fell. Luckily, Paula was there to catch her. Another fall this time would be catastrophic.

We feel that we can’t leave her alone for the time being. So that means finding someone to sit for us.

So when our children were little we had to find a baby sitter so that we could go out and have some time together alone. Now here we are decades later with the same problem. Is there a word for someone you use for watching over your frail parent? Baby-sitting doesn’t feel right, perhaps grandma-sitting or elder-sitting?

On the third day of Christms…

December 27, 2013

… my true love gave to me.

Paula and Mary are off to the beauty shop to get their hair done. Then they are headed to the Little Company of Mary hospital to get an MRI done on Mary’s shoulder.

So for 2 hours, I am master of my domain. Seeing as this is the bicentenial of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth, so I got a new (to me) recording from 1961 of Verdi’s Otello. Loaded it up on iTunes on my PC and cranked up the volume. None of this ear bud stuff. I have a sound system connected to my laptop. Sub woofer and everything. Here’s the link to iTunes. I have a couple more operas on my short list to get when I get a chance.

Then I did some post Christmas shopping. Paula said she would give me a new pair of LL Bean leather slippers. She said, “be a dear and order it yourself”. So I did. Same price as before Christmas and free shipping. Would have been nice if LL Bean had a sale on, oh well.

I then downloaded a couple of sample Kindle books from Amazon. I’m not buying anymore books until I finish Doris Kearn Goodwins’ tome on FDR. I’m about half way through it.

So Mary is looking a little bit better, but still very frail.

Merry Christmas

December 24, 2013

Merry Christmas to all of friends and family spread across the globe. Time for an update from San Pedro. Thank you for all the Christmas cards and letters that we have received. We are running out of space to hang them around our dining room wall. It seems that more and more people are sending Christmas letters. We love reading them all.

This is the quiet time of Christmas. We had planned to go to Christmas Eve services at the Ocean View Baptist Church in San Pedro, but we had to cancel on account of Mary K’s situation. More on that later.

Mike, Theresa and Jonathan will be over for Christmas dinner tomorrow. That will be fun. Having Jonathan over is always fun. He is such a joy. We got him a toy Xylophone. So now we can have a duet!

I am trying not to gloat but the weather here is wonderful. Temp today is 70 right now. It was a bit higher earlier in the afternoon.

Mary K has had a hard time of it for the last couple of weeks. First was the fall that knocked her three front teeth out. She has almost finished the dental work to fix that situation. Now, this past Sunday, she was walking with Paula late in the day when she got dizzy and fell again. Paula generally has tried to keep her arm on her. But for some reason she got distracted.

So, more hurt. We eventually called the EMT’s. Had her transported to the ER. She didn’t think she could handle getting into the Jeep. So she had X-rays that showed fractured left humerus. They gave her a sling and pain meds and sent her home.

Paula got her into the Jeep and brought her home. I met her down by the elevator with one of our kitchen chairs with wheels. We got her upstairs and into bed for the night.

On Monday, Paula took her to orthopedic doc for followup. Wants to schedule MRI. Not sure what that’s going to show. Anyway, we got the Rx filled at CVS. Trying to keep her comfortable.

She seems so much more frail than she was before this last incident. She seems visibly weaker. I suppose not eating very much doesn’t help things.

So everyone, please pray for her. She can use all the help that God can provide. And try to keep this quiet. She doesn’t read anything on the internet. Not Facebook, not email, not blogs. We have been trying to discretely let people know her situation. She would be mad at me for dropping a dime on her. But I thought it was important for everyone to know.

So looking forward, she won’t be driving for a while and that’s a good thing. Maybe, just maybe we can take the car keys away from her for good. Once again we will try to get her to use a walker, or at the very least a cane. That will be a hard sell. She wouldn’t be able to use it anyway with her arm in a sling.

So Christmas Eve supper is in the crock pot. We’re having pea soup with leftover ham and carrots. It’s been cooking since 10am this morning.

Maybe we’ll watch another Christmas movie on Netflix. Toss up between Chevy Chase’s “Christmas Vacation” or maybe “It’s a Wonderful Life”. I’m leaning towards Chevy Chase.
