Weather etc.

July 3, 2012

Time for an update. After seeing the national news and national weather maps, I begin to appreciate how nice it is her in NH. The south-east is sweltering with no power and no AC. Colorado and Utah are up in flames. And here in NH, it doesn’t get much higher than 80. We don’t have AC in the condo, and mostly we don’t need it. This morning’s temp was about 55 with ground fog. Warmed up to about 75 by mid-afternoon.

If it weren’t for the winter, this would be a nice place to retire. Last few days our routine was to go to the UPS store, then the deli next store for lunch, then across the common to pick up the mail at the Post Office. Sometimes we go to “Annie’s Overflow Cafe” for lunch. Sign over the door says “$5 charge for whining”. They have art work posted on the walls from local artists. My favorite is titled “Sit Free or Die”. (pictures of many NH outhouses). I have been tempted  to buy it. I don’t think that Mary K would appreciate the yankee humor.

Shipped the last of three boxes off to Mike. Sent stuff that we probably won’t need until we get to California. Should ease the pain of packing the Jeep. We did our grocery shopping today and we are all set for the Fourth of July. Nothing special planned. If it gets hot, we might find a movie in the afternoon.

We still need to catch up to Bill at Hebron Marine. He told us that the boat has been sold. So we will have a couple of checks to catch. Unfortunately, the closest B of A ATM is in Concord.

The trip to Ireland is all set. We will be in Ireland from 7/13 to 7/24. So stay cool. If you’re out west pray for rain. If you’re down south, I hope you get the power and AC back on. I know how hot it can be down south without AC.

Cheers,

Joe

Retirement

June 27, 2012

It’s beginning to feel like retirement. The weather has been cool and rainy. We haven’t felt the need to get up early. I can do two crossword puzzles if I like.

Paula and I worked on packing up some boxes of clothing that we aren’t going to need on the trip. We also packed up some stuff for Neil that we had intended to carry in the Jeep. UPS is better option. So we dropped off two boxes at the UPS store. We’ll probably do a couple more boxes of stuff that we won’t need on the trip.

We finally got around to look into the trip to Ireland that we had been wanting to do but didn’t have the time to do. So we’re booked on a 7/13/12 flight to Dublin. Click here for info.

Did some shopping at the outlets in Tilton. Got some new shorts for me and new dress for Paula. Then we had lunch at the Tilt’n Diner. Back to the condo by 4pm in time for a nap.

Life is good.

Phase II

June 26, 2012

We arrived in Plymouth on Sunday. Completely unloaded the Jeep yesterday. It felt good to get out of the hotel and be somewhere familiar.

We are kind of glad that we haven’t sold the condo. We now have a place to relax and get ready for the long cross country trip.

We got a couple of boxes at the local UPS store in Plymouth. Paula is packing up her gowns to be shipped ahead to Mike. We’ll do the same for a lot of stuff that we won’t be needing on the trip.

Called Electric and Gas to cancel. Checked bank to see if Dave deposited the proceeds check (He did. Don’t think I’ve ever seen our checking account with that much money.)

Today, we catch up on laundry, blogging, another trip to UPS store. and relaxing.

Phase I Complete

June 24, 2012

I declare that Phase I of our move to LA is done.

We are officially no longer a resident of Billerica. Closing went well. We went to church at the First Congregational Church in Billerica for the last time (for now). Said our goodbyes to our many friends. We had lunch with some of them at Chili’s in Lowell. (Fund raiser for the FCCB Pilgrim Fellowship). Chili’s donates 10% of the check to the fundraiser.

Friday and Saturday we finished up a few todo’s. Called to cancel homeowner’s insurance. Returned DVR and router to Verizon store. Forwarded mail to San Pedro.

So we are ensconced in our place in Plymouth. We stopped at the grocery store to get a few things for dinner.

Tomorrow we need to unload the Jeep and assess what we really need to take with us to LA. Then we need to do a full grocery shopping trip. Need to call National Grid to cancel electric and gas. Tried to do it on Friday, but they were closed for the day.

In the next few days we need to do planning for trip to Ireland, Check to see that check from closing got deposited.

In a way we are glad that the condo hasn’t been sold. Now we can use it to get ready for the big push west. We wouldn’t want to be heading out without the chance to recover from last week’s moveout marathon.

Stay tuned.

We don’t live here anymore

June 23, 2012

While driving from Salem down to Billerica this morning to attend a memorial service for an OES member who has passed away, it occurred to us as we got off at Treble Cove Rd that we don’t live here anymore.

Weather was much more refreshing this morning was a refreshing 72 degrees this morning.

Trying to catchup on a bunch of minor errands before we head north tomorrow.

The closing went smoothly. We also signed new wills and other estate docs.

Next, OES reception tonight in Wakefield.

Four days to go

June 18, 2012

Well Monday is done and in the record books. We are both whipped.

Tom and Al from Mercer & Sons moving were here most of the day. We are about 99% packed and loaded into the pod. There is still room for a wardrobe box and a couple other odds and ends.

Guy came to pick up Neil’s bed and the two end tables. We also found a buyer for them entertainment center. She took half and will be back tomorrow for the other half.

We just finished what is probably our last meal at 54 Dyer Street. Fresh green beans and lamb chops cooked on the grill. Very good. Now for apple pie and ice cream for desert.

Had to cook on the grill, because all the pots and pans have been packed.

Tomorrow Tom and Al will be back to move the piano to church and the DR set to Jerrod and Suzie’s house in N Billerica.

Then empty the house and finally OES at Billerica Chapter.

Hotel for next few days.

What a mad house

June 17, 2012

Six days to go. Closing is scheduled at bank’s atty in Acton. Sent in payoff report for the mortgage. Welcome to the asylum.

Filled the blue trash bin to overflowing. Good thing that trash pickup is tomorrow. Had to use one overflow bag for extra trash. Put out the recycle bins. There is still much junk to go.

Tomorrow. Movers scheduled to get us mostly packed and POD loaded. Fire Dept guy is coming back to reinspect smoke alarms.

The guy who is buying Neil’s bed finally called and said he would have trailer tomorrow afternoon to pickup bed and other stuff.

Piano has to be moved tomorrow to church. DR set is going to Susan and Jerod McLay.

I played Bach’s Wachet Auf at church this morning. I wish I could play it as good as some of the musicians I have heard.

We went down to try and visit the “Job Lane” house in Bedford. Too bad, not open today. Job Lane was one of the original settlers of Bedford back in the 18th century. We’ve lived here for 34 years and never got around to go visit. It’s open next Sunday, so we’ll get to see it before we blow town.

Pods

June 6, 2012

Another eventful day in our moving adventure. Se spent last night at a reception for two of the Deputy Grand Matrons at Palestine Chapter in Newtonville. Late night, got home at 11:30pm.

Today, made calls to pods.com to talk about how we are going to move our stuff to So Cal. The concept is that they take a “pod” to your location for you to fill up with your stuff. Once full, you call them up and send it on its way. At the other end, one has the pod sent to your destination where you unload.

Seems to work for us. Conventional movers don’t seem interested in the amount of stuff we had to move. It’s not cheap mind you. We will be spending about $4500 to move a pod sized 7’x7’x8′ from Billerica to San Pedro.

For relaxation we went to FCCB for weekly bible study. 17 people showed up for Pizza and Romans Chapter 7.

We also talked with local mover who will help us pack and load the pod. He will also be moving the piano to the church.

We talked with our RE agent about overall progress towards closing on the 22nd.

Installed three new smoke detectors that meet the new requirements for the Fire dept. Called Fire inspector for recheck.

Finally loaded up four bins with LP records for the Lodge yard sale. Dinner of BBQ pork chops and fresh green beans.

Craig’s List

June 4, 2012

First day of retirement today and it was a busy one.

We got rid of the couch and recliner yesterday. They went to Vicky. It was a hard sell. But we got it all loaded into Sean’s van.

Put several items posted on Craig’s list. Sold the two living room occasional chairs. Got some hits on the dressers. Got a hit on Neil’s bedroom set.

Still need to sell the Dining Room set.

Played phone tag with one moving company.

Dentist tomorrow. The Fire inspector told us that we had the wrong kind of smoke detectors. So off to O’Connors to get the right kind. Arggggg. In the Comm of Mass. one has to have smoke detectors inspection prior to closing. Also, have to have CO detectors on each floor. Got that part right.
