Yesterday, we were watching our grandson Jonathan all day while Mike and Theresa went to a conference on home-schooling. So Jonathan arrived early and left late. He has become quite used to our place and our presence. He fussed just for a few seconds when they left. But that ended quite promptly after they left. Jonathan has a generous set of toys at our place. He knows where they are and that they are his toys.

In previous posts, I have talked about our journey to Los Angeles. If Mike, Theresa and their family were living in the Boston area, we probably wouldn’t have made the decision to pull up stakes and move across the country. We would probably have moved Mary either to assisted living or a nursing home or moved her back east. Mary was one of the reasons we moved here, Jonathan is the reason that we are staying here and enjoying life here out west.

So yesterday morning we decided to go for a walk around our condo walkway. Jonathan is still learning to speak, but he clearly understands us. When we said “Let’s go for a walk”, he went to our front door and got his shoes. (We have adopted a Chinese custom of removing one’s shoes inside.) So off we go,the three adults walking and Jonathan running as fast as his little feet can carry him. He stops to look at the shadows cast from the trees and railings. He looks at the flowers. This is a nice place to walk. It is flat and protected. No danger of running out into traffic. We can let him run to his heart’s content. Here are a couple of pictures:

Jonathan is clearly picking up language. Sometimes we can’t tell whether the word is childish gibberish or Chinese. His word for a dog is “gogu”. Many times Jonathan will point to something that he wants (usually to eat). So now we tell him , “Use the word”. We usually know what he wants but we are encouraging him to use words for whatever he wants. Usually pretzel goldfish, potato chips, crackers, etc. All of the things that he knows that grandparents will have on hand for him.

Yesterday we were fixing lunch and he comes in to help speed things up. He has discovered the ice dispenser and water dispenser on our refrigerator. So he pushes the lever and out comes half a dozen ice cubes. So Jonathan says in the cutest possible way, “OH-OH”. So Paula tells him to pick up the ice and put it into the sink, which he does. So today’s word is “Oh-Oh”. Precious.

By 2PM, everyone is ready for a nap. Jonathan is no exception. He lays down on our bed and sleeps for 1.5 hours. Sometime a little longer.

After nap, we decide we can do a little TV. We bring up our Netflix account and start “Curious George”. There is lots of kids programming on Netflix. Sometimes we watch on the TV, sometimes on the iPad. After Curious George, it’s time for Red Sox Baseball on MLB.TV. You can’t start a child too early on watching Red Sox Baseball. By the time he is five, I expect him to know who “Big Papi” is and how to read a baseball score sheet.

So today is Saturday and much quieter around her.

Update on Mary

Okay, it’s been a while since I last gave an update. As many of you know, Paula and I are living with her mother here in Sunny California. It will be two years in August since we arrived here from Massachusetts.

Mary is recovering nicely from here shoulder surgery in January. She just this week did her last physical therapy session. She could probably do more of the exercises that have been given her to do at home. She hasn’t had any falls since last December and that is a good thing. We have to be ever vigilant especially on steps and rough surfaces. She still is driving. Every once in a while she brings up the subject and we try to put off the subject. Eventually she forgets about it.

Her short term memory is getting much worse. She has trouble remembering what day of the week it is. We have a calendar on the kitchen table that she can use to help track what she is doing (or supposed to be doing). We are continuing to try to keep our home safe from trip hazards. We are constantly reminding her to use her cane. We have warned her that the next fall might kill her.

Mary and Paula just returned from a trip to Kansas for Mary’s high school reunion. Unfortunately her brother, sister-in-law and sister were unable to make the trip due to health reasons. But nevertheless she met with many of her cousins that she would not have otherwise seen. She doesn’t communicate well with her family. No writing, no phone calls, no email. If sometimes we make the call she will talk. So Paula and I have become the conduit for communication with her siblings.

When our grandson Jonathan comes to visit her eyes just light up. Jonathan is 2 1/2 years old and is extremely cute. Those visits just make her day.

Over the past couple of years we have managed to improve her diet. Before we arrived, her meals were few and far between. She said that she just wasn’t hungry. So we now have regular meals and get her to sit at the table and eat with us. Figuring out what she likes to eat though is a challenge. Managing the left overs in the refrigerator is also a problem. We usually go out to lunch after church. Mary usually eats about half of her meal and takes the rest home. Then we try to get her to eat the stuff that she brought home as well as other stuff before it spoils and needed to be thrown out.

So next week we are driving to Salt Lake City to visit with our son Neil and attend his step-son’s graduation. So on the one hand Mary will be riding with us. So that means we don’t have to worry about her well being while we are gone, but she is a lousy traveller. I will need to manage two sets of room reservations and try to get her to help pay for some of the meals and other travel expenses. Actually, that’s a lot easier now, I just charge it on her credit card.

That’s all for now. I hope to do a post while we are up in SLC.

 Later,

 Joe

Update on Mary

First the good news. Mary’s shoulder continues to improve. She is doing PT twice a week in outpatient rehab facility in San Pedro. Sometimes Paula takes her and sometime I get the job. She isn’t driving yet. We hope that she doesn’t get to drive again. She really needs someone at her side to catch her if she stumbles. Another fall could kill her. She stills has some shoulder pain. Some days are better than others. Dr. prescribed an NSAID for the pain. It seems to help.

Now the bad news. Her mental facilities have been fading of late. She certainly knows who Paula and I are. But some times she is confused as to what day it is.

For example, today she slept most of the afternoon. She got up at about 5:30 PM. She says to me, “I don’t usually wake up this early in the morning”. I try to gently tell her that it is 5:30 PM not AM.

Often times she will ask several times what day it is and what we are doing for the day. She sometimes forgets what we did an hour ago. We will watch the local news. Afterwards, she will ask if we can watch the news.

Paula will be taking her for her high school reunion in Eureka, KS in May. The reunion is held every year on Memorial Day weekend. The high school was so small that the reunion is for all class years. I begged off. I have appointment to rearrange my sock drawer. Mary definitely needs someone to shepherd her through the complexities of air travel. Especially since they will need to change planes in Las Vegas.

Paula and I have pretty much taken over her day to day scheduling. Making Dr’s appointments and taking were she needs to go. Paying her bills, etc. One day at a time.

The bravado that we faced when we first moved out her is pretty much gone. i.e I can do everything for myself, by myself. She seems to have learned to accept the help that we have given her.

I have begun to cherish the time that I get Paula alone. We are looking forward to our trip back to Mass in May. It will be a short trip due to the need to turn around and take Mary to KS.

Later,

Joe

Los Angeles Union Station

On Saturday, Paula and I did a tour of the Los Angeles Union Station in downtown LA. The trip was sponsored by the nice folks at the San Pedro Historical Society. The actual tour was done by volunteer docents from the LA Conservancy. We had a total of about 36 people that was split into three groups to do the tour. There are so many clocks through out the building to keep you aware of the time.

Here is the view of the main entrance.

The station has two gardens on either side of the station. I was first struck by the awesome view of the towering palm trees. There are many roses, greenery and fountains. Here are a few more pictures.

The architecture is a combination of Art-Deco, Moderne, and Mission Revival. Our docent described it as “Pueblo Deco” architecture. When you arrive at the station you walk through a long tunnel with ceilings about 9.5 ft high. Then you reach the main terminal you are treated with site of arched ceilings with beautiful chandeliers.

The main waiting area has these beautifully restored cushioned seats. At one time they were made of leather. The leather has since been replaced by vinyl. They are very comfortable. You don’t see seats like this at a modern airport.

We visited what was once the main restaurant at the station. The restaurant was run by Fred Harvey. Fred Harvey was an entrepreneur who had developed many restaurants for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. These were among first instances of chain restaurants across the USA. Currently the restaurant has no fixtures, but you can imagine the grandeur that was once there. Notice the marble floors and the wrap-around bar. We were told that the area is available for rental for special functions (weddings, galas and such).

While we’re on the subject of the ATSF railroad, I found an interesting fact. The ATSF railroad never made it to Santa Fe. Apparently the terrain was too difficult. The ATSF railroad was of course made famous by the song of the same name. The song was made famous in the movie “The Harvey Girls“. Here is a You Tube link to Judy Garland singing “On the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe” on her TV show.

One more thing. We told the docent that we would like to see some trains. This being a train station afterall. So here are a couple of pictures of some of the trains.

Be sure to follow the many hyper-links through out this post. There is so much to learn about this fascinating place.

Shepherd’s Pie

Last night was our weekly family dinner night. In honor of St Patrick we had Shepherd’s Pie, not corned beef. I despise corned beef. And seeing as it was my turn to cook, we decided to do Shepherd’s pie.

So hear is my recipe. It’s mostly in my head. It is not one of those meals that I need to work from a written recipe. There are many variations of shepherd’s pie to be found on the internet. This is just my variation on the theme.

 Ingredients

 1.5lb ground beef
 2 c Fresh mushrooms
 1 med onion, chopped
1/2 of a 16oz. bag of frozen peas and carrots. Generic store brand is fine.
2 bags instant mashed potatoes (I use the “just add water” variation for about 4-6 servings)
 1 c shredded cheddar cheese
1 jar brown gravy (12 oz. Heinz or equivalent) Some recipes suggest using cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup. My preference is the gravy.
 1/2 tsp ground pepper
 1 tsp salt

 Directions

Sauté the onions and mushrooms in a couple teaspoons of olive oil. Then set aside. [Last night we skipped the onions because Theresa is sensitive to onions.]

Brown the ground beef. After the ground beef is cooked, drain the fat. Add the mushrooms, onion, peas and carrots and the gravy. Add the salt and pepper. Simmer for a few minutes. You might not need the whole jar of gravy. Judge for yourself how “soupy” you want it to be.

Pour the ground beef mixture into 7×13 casserole dish.

Prepare the mashed potatoes as directed on the package. Spread the mash potatoes on top of the ground beef.

 Sprinkle the cheddar on top.

Bake in 350 oven for about 20 minutes (cheese should be melted and gravy bubbling on the edges.)

Variations: Some folks use either green beans or corn. Not my preference though.

Also, best served with Guinness beer and Irish Whiskey.

Jonathan seemed to like the concoction. Though, I think he mostly liked the mashed potato part, less so for the hamburger.

Be thou my Vision

I discovered a hymn while reading a blog called “The Inspired Funeral“. I discovered the blog from an article in the NY Times. The hymn is called “Be Thou My Vision” and is based on a sixth century Monastic text and an Irisih Folk Tune. And seeing as today is St. Patrick’s Day, I thought this would be a good thing to post.

Here are the lyrics:

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my Wisdom, and thou my true Word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, and I thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Here is a youtube performance with piano and cello. Truly haunting.

Here’s a hint to my Lodge and OES friends in LA. You will be hearing this soon.

Mother in Law

So yesterday at Ocean View we had a guest preacher who was preaching about marriage. After reading the title I was bracing myself for the harangue about same sex marriage, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was about the sacredness of marriage vows. It was more something I would expect to hear in a Roman Catholic Church. He was quoting from Malachi Chapter 2. But never mind.

This post is more about Mothers-in-law. Our own pastor at the end of the service told us a joke about Mothers-in-law. It goes something like this:

M-I-L to S-I-L: I would like to be cremated.

S-I-L to M-I-L: Okay, get your coat. Let’s go.

I told Pastor Jacques after the service, I feel your pain.

So as a Son-in-Law living with my Mother-in-Law, I try real hard to keep a thick skin and try to ignore the unintentional and intentional slights. Every day is a challenge.

So yesterday, Paula and I were planning on going to the movies to see “12 Years a Slave”. [By the way, it’s a great movie. Go see it.] We asked Mary K if she would like to come. Sometimes I hope for a “No” so that I can have some alone time with my Paula. But this time she said yes.

So off we go to the theater in Torrance. We hardly get a 1/2 mile from our house when she tells us that she forgot her glasses. So we are already on a tight schedule. So we don’t go back.

We find a parking space that is not too far from the theater. (Perhaps I need to try again to persuade her to apply for a HP placard.) We get out tickets and proceed to the theater. The lights are already down low for the upcoming attractions. We now find out that Mary K is now having really big problems with low light situations. The only place with three seats together is about 15 rows up.

I need to go into the row first to guide Mary K to her seat. So Mary K plops down between Paula and myself. So i can’t even sit next to my wife in the theater, arghhhh.

The film finishes and we wait for the credits to finish and for the house lights to come up so that we can get Mary K safely down the stairs without danger of falling.

As we head back to the car, we come to a curb that is painted red and is a contoured shape. Paula tries to get her to traverse the curb. It is clear that she can’t see it very well. So she stumbles and falls backward. Luckily we have a good hold on her and we manage her to a soft landing on her butt.

We finally get her back on her feet and back into the car. We stop for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant. Then finally home and after some news, into bed.

One more thing. Weather today is 75 and sunny. Not a cloud in the sky. I’m writing this sitting on the balcony. Paula and Mary K are off to her PT session. So I have about an hour of quiet time.

Update on Mary 2

It’s been a while since I’ve reported on Mary. She is recovering nicely from her surgery. She’s had occupational therapy (OT) at home three times a week. She is mostly going without the sling so she is a bit more functional, but not quite 100%.

Keeping track of her schedule for Dr’s appointments is challenging. It seems there always somewhere that we need to take her. And seeing as she isn’t driving, either Paula or I do the driving.

She finally allowed me to take over managing her finances. What a mess. I collected all of the tax related mail into a folder. This past Saturday I took the folder to her tax guy. I had thoughts of doing her taxes myself, but thought better of the idea. Easier to drop the load of paper on the accountant and let him sort it out. He had it done in short order. No missing 1099’s. I got her to sign the efile voucher. Now we’re all done but for sending the IRS and state of CA checks. The good news is that her finances are strong. She often claims poverty, but that just doesn’t hold up when you look at the numbers.

So in looking at her bank statement for January, I found someone had written three checks for a total of about $10,000. Mary had no clue about the checks. So off we go to Wells Fargo to try and straighten out the mess. We had to create a new account and transfer funds from the old account. So we need to get new checks and new debit cards. We left $200 or so in the old account to cover the last few checks outstanding. Paperwork sent to WF fraud department. We will probably get the money back. We have no idea how someone got a hold of the blank checks. We are trying to make sure that no blank checks are left out in plain view in the condo. Just in case our housekeeper was grabbing them.

So, what next? Mary will be starting outpatient physical therapy this week. We will be beginning to plan our trip back east in May. Right now, we feel comfortable leaving her alone for a couple of hours so that Paula and I can have a date night. We are less comfortable leaving her alone for a week. We are hoping that we can find someone (perhaps from church or OES) to spend the week with her. Paula and I will manage to fit in our annual physicals this month.

So I hear it has been snowing a bit back east. I have been trying real hard not to comment. The weather here has been outstanding. Today is sunny and about 70. Forecast for the weekend is a serious rain storm. Lord we can use the rain. Prices of fruits, vegetables and meat are surely going up this summer as more large farms in the CA Central Valley fail. By the way, gasoline here just went up over $4.00 per gallon of regular.

Tuesday night is our regular family dinner tonight. Mike, Theresa and Jonathan will be here. Menu is meatloaf, mashed potatoes and beans or as I like to call it “Masonic menu #2”. Menu #1 is of course “Roast beef, Potatoes, and green beans”. Of course are green beans are fresh, at Thomas Talbot Lodge they come out of a can (gross).

Theresa and Mike are expecting their second child in October. We are so looking forward to our second grandchild.

Well, that’s enough for now. Stay warm.

High Noon

Last night we watched the movie “High Noon” on Netflix. High Noon starred Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. Gary Cooper plays a retiring Marshall who is faced with meeting a bad guy from his past who has been released from prison. So the story starts with Cooper’s character getting married to Grace Kelly’s character on a Sunday morning.

High Noon (1952) Poster

Then he is told by the railroad station guy that the bad guy is coming on the noon train to meet up with his old gang. Of course, none of the cowards in the town are brave enough to help. Half the town is in the saloon, the other half in the church. So it’s only Gary Cooper and his bride to take on the four bad guys.

You’d expect Gary Cooper to face the four in the street, head to head. But no, he’s brave but not stupid. He picks them off one by one in the alleys and barns. Lloyd Bridges plays the Deputy Marshall who also won’t help.

Also starring in the movie are Harry Morgan (from MASH and Dragnet fame), Lloyd Bridges and Lon Chaney. Gary Cooper won the Best Actor Oscar for the film in 1953.

So what got us watching High Noon? That’s the real story here. I was looking for “Western” music to play at our LA Harbor Lodge meetings. That’s “Western” music, not “Country and Western” music. That lead me to several TV Westerns and Movie Westerns. Some movie themes don’t work so well when done on a piano. They only work well for a full orchestra.

So that led me to the theme from “High Noon”, written by the great Dimitri Tiomkin and lyrics by Ned Washington. Tiomkin and Washington won Oscars for Best Song and Best Score. It works well for piano. So I downloaded the lead sheet score from Musicnotes.com.

Here are the lyrics from High Noon.

Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin’,
On this, our wedding day.
Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin’,
Wait; wait alone.
I do not know what fate awaits me.
I only know I must be brave.
For I must face a man who hates me,
Or lie a coward, a craven coward;
Or lie a coward in my grave.

Oh, to be torn ‘twixt love an’ duty.
S’posin’ I lose my fair-haired beauty.
Look at that big hand move along,
Nearing high noon.

He made a vow while in state prison:
Vowed it would be my life for his an’,
I’m not afraid of death but, oh, what shall I do,
If you leave me?

Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin’:
You made that promise as a bride.
Do not forsake me, oh, my darlin’.
Although you’re grievin’, don’t think of leavin’,
Now that I need you by my side.

Wait along, (Wait along.)
Wait along.
Wait along. (Wait along, wait along, wait along, wait along.)

I particularly like the second verse “He made a vow while in state prison, Vowed it would be my life or his an”.

Finally, here is the link to the theme “High Noon” sung by Tex Ritter.

To the members of LA Harbor Lodge, you will be hearing “High Noon” at our next meetings.

TTFN,

Joe
