Day 5

August 6, 2012

Don’t have the exact numbers for today’s travel. It’s about 450 miles today and about 1250 miles since start of the trip.

We are about 50 miles east of Montgomery, AL, the home of Maxwell AFB. We visited Maxwell about 8 years ago for Mike’s commissioning in the USAF.

We have about 350 miles to go tomorrow to get to Houma, LA.

Our trip was uneventful. We hit some heavy traffic going through Atlanta.

So here’s some food for thought. We are all bombarded with political ads and commentary from pundits exhorting us to buy American. Right?

So how can you tell whether something that you bought was made in America? You can look at the label inside a piece of clothing. But how about cars? On the way down here on I85 we passed three car production plants. Two in Spartanburg, SC. And one just up the road in AL. The two in SC are BMW and VW. The one in AL is KIA. These plants are huge and they employ a LOT of Americans.

So the next time you are thinking about buying an “American” car think about where it might have been built.

And oh by the way, my iPad was “Made in China”

Good night y’all.

BBQ

August 4, 2012

Hi y’all,

We’ve had a fun day in sunny, hot North Carolina. We first went to the town of Apex. Paula and Jennifer did a little window shopping while John and I sat in the coffee shop and had a coffee.

Then we went to the Ole Time Barbecue for lunch. First up was a batch of hush puppies. Then we had some pulled pork, fried okra, collard greens, and mac’n’cheese. Very tasty.

Then we did a drive around the Capitol building. Then we went to the Museum of Natural History.

We will be in the NC area until Monday morning when we leave for New Orleans. We are the guests of John & Jennifer Fisher. John was one of my coworkers at HP working on storage arrays.

Here is the view out John’s back door.

We had an excellent home cooked dinner of chicken and noodles. Today we will do some touring.

CIE Tours

July 24, 2012

Time to write down a few things about our tour. We had a wonderful time. The tour was run by CIE Tours. We really can’t enough good things about them.
The tour was the “Irish Explorer” tour that was 10 days long. If we were to do it again we might have picked a slightly shorter trip. After 10 days on the road we were worn out. There is little time to sit around and do nothing. We were up by 0600 every day and on the road by 0800. Typically we would get back to the hotel around 1700. Here is the URL for the tour.

http://www.cietours.com/us/escorted_tour/2012/irish_explorer_10d/

Our tour director was Patrick and he was a walking encyclopedia on things Ireland. And he could maneuver that bus into some unbelievable places.

CIE runs fully inclusive tours. This means everything is covered with the exception of lunches, bar bill, and gratuities.

We changed hotels every day. So that meant that on the day you were changing hotels, we had to have our luggage outside the door at 0700. So we didn’t have to schlep the luggage around. i will write a separate post on the hotels.

We visited some places that we had never heard of before.

We had a total of 29 people on our group. It turned out to be a really fun group. We really enjoyed the group. We had people from New England, New York, Ohio, Minnesota and Florida. About half the group were retired. and the other half in 40’s/50’s.

Weather was cool. Most days the high temp didn’t  get above 65F. Somedays we had a little rain. Most of the rain seemed to burn off by afternoon.

We flew on Aer Lingus. We were surprised to get free meals in coach. And no charge for baggage. Outbound trip was on the red-eye. By the time we got to our hotel we were pretty well ragged after the 6 hr flight, customs, luggage, etc.

If were to do visit Ireland again, we might stay in one place for a longer time. There was so much in Dublin that we just didn’t have time to see.

Day 9

July 22, 2012

Rain is back. Yesterday was just about the only sunny day of the trip.

Last day of the tour. Going from

Killarney back to Dublin.

Arrived at the town of Blarney. Not much here but shops.

Sat nursing a cup of coffee while downloaded email and FB.

People queued up for the ATM.
Wifi worked fine at 0930 but all bogged down at 1100.

Now driving through Cork.

Saint Patrick’s Rock of Cashel in Tipperary County. Here are a few pictures. Nice article on Wickipedia.

Arrived back in Dublin. Fly home tomorrow.

Day 6 Connemara

July 21, 2012

I’m at the Hotel Meyrick in Galway. This time we had a real nice view out of our window. Our room faced out on to Eyre Square (aka John F Kennedy Square). Here’s the view at dawn.

First stop on yesterday’s tour was the Connemara Crystal factory. One of the craftsmen did a demo carving of a small bowl. Then we learned about the process of making leaded crystal. Beautiful stuff.

Every once in a while we would stop for a photo op. Finally got to the town of Clifden for lunch. It seemed that the joint was loaded with tourists.

Next stop was the Kylemore Abbey. Didn’t have enough time to tour. But just enough time for a couple of pictues.

Every once and a while we would stop for a photo op.

Here is a statue built be the good people of Recess in County Connemara for no apparent reason.

Finally, we did a cruise on the Connemara Lady on a fjord in County Connemara.

More later. Time for breakfast. Then on the road to County Kerry.

Day 4

July 17, 2012

More rain and fog today. We drove through the fishing village of Killybegs to view the Slieve League Cliffs. We had to take minibuses to the top of the cliffs because the road was too narrow for the tour bus. The tour guide (another Patrick) talked about what we would see if it weren’t for the fog. The guide also ran a little gift shop and restaurant at the base of the cliffs.

Once again there many sheep wandering about the hill sides. Sometimes the sheep would decide to wander on to the road. Probably more sheep in Ireland than people.

The hillside was covered with heather and peat bogs. When returned from our trip up to the cliffs, we were treated to coffee and fresh scones.

After leaving Slieve League, we meandered along a very narrow road. One time we met up with a mini-bus with no room to pass. Eventually, we found a spot where we could pass without falling into the ditch.

Then we came to another gift shop. This one was a woolen shop in the village of Ardara called Triona. Short tour showed how the weaving machines worked. We didn’t buy much. Paula convinced me to buy a woolen cap. Didn’t feel the need to get any wool sweaters for Southern California. Oh and they gave us a hot mug of Irish coffee. Very tasty.

Retirement

June 27, 2012

It’s beginning to feel like retirement. The weather has been cool and rainy. We haven’t felt the need to get up early. I can do two crossword puzzles if I like.

Paula and I worked on packing up some boxes of clothing that we aren’t going to need on the trip. We also packed up some stuff for Neil that we had intended to carry in the Jeep. UPS is better option. So we dropped off two boxes at the UPS store. We’ll probably do a couple more boxes of stuff that we won’t need on the trip.

We finally got around to look into the trip to Ireland that we had been wanting to do but didn’t have the time to do. So we’re booked on a 7/13/12 flight to Dublin. Click here for info.

Did some shopping at the outlets in Tilton. Got some new shorts for me and new dress for Paula. Then we had lunch at the Tilt’n Diner. Back to the condo by 4pm in time for a nap.

Life is good.
